XP not working on some sites, nor with some VB macros in excel, or causing havoc with java? But browsing quite happily is, as are other things?
Make sure your proxy is set properly - all those apps (and more) will access 'the web' via the system wide proxy, if it's not right, some apps will like it, others won't.
